"For A Hundred Smile"

Visiting the Lebanese American University on a beautiful morning to submit the collected plastic bottles caps made our day!This visit is a form of contribution from grade 6 Khalil Shehab Primary School students to make the"For a hundred smile" activity a fruitful action, which mainly aims at providing wheelchairs for handicapped.One ton of collected caps is equivalent to a wheelchair.The more we are involved ,the more we are environmentaly and socially conscious. Arc en Ciel is the NGO that is behind this intiative. Let's all think of the 3 Rs: reducing, reusing, and recycling. This project is environmental and humanitarian. What can be better than that?!

June 5 is "World Environment Day." This day was instituted by the United Nations to stimulated worldwide awareness of the environment. A day to promote caring for our planet, Earth. World Environment Day is celebrated around the world with street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling efforts, clean-up campaigns and much more.

We, second graders, have celebrated this day through a collaborative project with our friends at Hatton Vale State School in Queensland, Australia. We decided to write a story together, so we took turns with each class writing a part alternate weeks. It was a new experience and the excitement grew as we eagerly awaited the moment that we could all read our Aussie friends' parts.

Reusing and Reducing

Nursery children are Learning about " Pets". They collected empty bottles, old CDs and empty boxes, painted and decorated them to make pets out of these items instead of throwing them away. They learned the importance of reusing things to reduce waste and help the environment. Let's keep our environment clean through reusing and reducing. That's not all, we also made our classroom and playground environmental rules as a reminder :)

“E-waste Best Management in Public Administrations and Institutions” lobbying event by Beaatoona
Lebanon lacks professional recycling solution of e- waste that meets the international norms and standards . Beeatoona NGO is so far the only party who has experience in this field and is currently planning the shipment of the collected e-waste from its national campaign, under the guidance of the Ministry of Lebanon. “Status of The Electronic Waste in The Lebanese Ministries” is a report that provides the information required to prepare a roadmap for the implementation of a specific structure for the proper management and for the developing of a policy framework in the country. Here are some interesting statistics shown in the report while conducting the project:
-65% of Lebanese use computers
-people aging 18-22 are the dominant users of computers constituting 90% of the age group range using computers
-use of computers in Nabatieh is the highest with 77%
-stored for 4 years before disposal constitute 20% of the disposal methods of e –waste in ministries, stored methods constitute 45% and sent away constitute 35%
-The average turnover rate for computers used between 2-4 years is 30% while more than 4 years use 70%
-the individual during his lifespan produces more than 500 times than its weight.
Mr. Smith, the president of USAID, discussed during the event the improper disposal of electronic devices in this electronic age and the potential environmental risks associated with E-waste and how when stored it reveals to be a costly operation which can reach up a 12000 a year. Then the president of Beeatoona tackled the question: Why e-waste? And then answered by” there is no legislation to manage these e-waste where 1 desktop and one 17 monitor contains 22 kg of chemicals and 240 kg of fossil fuel which can be also found in a mid size car”. The representative of the ministry of environment declared that their will be in the near future a law concerning management of electronic wastes and procedures to encourage the extended producer responsibility .She also stated that Law 387 and 432 can be considered the first legal step towards the commitment to the need to regulate the management of toxic substances. Then there was a display of the Proposed E-waste management plan that should be elaborated and adopted by all ministries:
1-creation of an inter ministerial E -waste Committee
-lobbying instrument to attain a ministerial decree
-insures the compliance of all ministries with regulations set by the ministerial decree
2-Inventory:
- To perform a detailed inventory of the current E-waste
-Schedule periodic inventories
- Common inventory manual should be tailored
3- Storage:
-A ventilated storage room with fire prevention tools ,and isolated from extreme weather conditions
-E-waste should not be mixed with other types of wastes
-E-waste should be stored on wooden pallets to protect the E-waste from water spills.
-it should not be stored for more 1 year
4-Disposal of E-waste
- It should be handled to accredited third parties, that would guarantee that the collected e-waste from the ministries would be properly stored dismantled, and shipped for recycling.
Oversee the achievements of the project:
-produced an assessments of the e-waste in the ministries
-drafted a decree to legislate the best management and handed to the ministry of Environment
-designated awareness
At the end, I should mention that all parties were glad by the great success achieved because of the high support of ministry and Beeatoona delegation.

“The blue peace: Rethinking Middle East Water ‘’ by the Strategic Foresight Group
The water crisis in the Middle East can be transformed into an opportunity -the blue peace where any two countries with access to sustainable water resources don’t feel motivated to engage in military conflict. And this can be only achieved through new short term and long term regional policy instruments for water security in seven countries in the Middle East: Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and the Palestinian Territories. This was the conclusion drawn from the Strategic Foresight Group which is a leading think tank based in India with global reach headed by Mr.Sundeep Waslekar. The Strategic Foresight Group report was discussed in the “The blue peace: Rethinking Middle East water” event which was held on Wednesday the 19th in Carnegie Middle East Center. This report was prepared with input from almost 100 leaders and it provides scenarios for water availability for the seven countries under different circumstances by 2030 and recommends new policy measures. According to the statistics found in the report,the river flows in Turkey , Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan have depleted by 40% from 1960 to 2010.For instance, the Yarmouk River declined from 600 million centimeter(MCM) to about 250-300 MCM per year while the Jordan river ,which its basin covers parts of 5 states: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine declined from 1300 MCM to 100 MCM. The flow of Euphrates in Iraq decreased about 18 billion centimeter in 2009 which was considered a drought year. The drought impact is strongly felt in the leanest months in Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq where the average monthly flow of a river is 3-5 % of the annual flow. The Jordan River does not exist for almost six months and the average flow in the leanest month can be only 1 MCM. With regards to Yarmouk, Euphrates and Tigris, riparian countries continue to disagree about the actual amount of flow of the rivers across boundaries. In fact, in 2010, the world witnessed disagreements, depleting rivers, climate risks, economic limitations and low technological base. But through the 6 components of the Cooperation Council for Water Resources which are: principles of cooperation, standardizing measurements, common goals for sustenance, regional climate change model, new technologies and basin level joint projects we can reach in 2020 the rejuvenation of Rivers, climate cooperation, economic growth and high technology .According to the National climate change reports and international experts, the summer temperatures will rise from 2.5-3.7 degree Celsius and the winter temperatures will rise by 2-3.1 degree Celsius over the next 50-70 years, resulting in faster evaporation of surface water in the Middle East. Regarding desertification, it is expected to affect Syria ,turkey ,Iraq and Jordan-around 60% of the land in Syria faces this threat. In turkey ,about 80% of the depletion has occurred over the last decade and the konya basin faces complete desertification by 2030.Dust storm have worsened due to the drought and decrease in vegetation. Practically, the report calls for a regional developed climate change models for 2010 -2100 to combat climate change and desertification.
The strategic foresight group report indicates that the present water level in the Dead Sea is 420 meters below sea level and will be 450 meters below sea level by 2040.The water surface area has reduced about 313 square km. If the surface water level in the Dead Sea continues to erode it will be reduced to a lake in 50 years, and will eventually disappear altogether. Moreover, there is unequal internal distribution of water due to the countries topography and geography. For example, Damascus and Hama are in the western part of the country while the Euphrates flows are in the eastern part. So the report recommends to address the internal disequilibrium.
Dr .Fadi Comair, the president of Mediterranean network of river basin organization (MENBO) introduced a new concept called “Hydrodiplomacy of international watercourses in the Near East region “.Actually, it is based on the application of regional cooperation that creates dynamics of transboundary basin economic development. Nowadays, any nation development depends on water quality and quantity availability. The conflicts on transboundary watercourse between riparian states will intensify and a number of steps should be taken to guarantee the equitable use of water resources for the population of the south east of the Mediterranean basin:
1-Shared water resources management:
-Regional cooperation framework to provide the countries domestic water needs and food security.
-Economic development policy while preserving the international basin ecosystems.
2-legal aspects which are still texts for conflict resolution:
-UN 1997 convention on the non-navigational of international
-European Union water framework directives
-Union for the Mediterranean water strategy (which is still rejected by Israel)
3- The Transboundary Basin Organization
-Equitable sharing and reasonable utilization
-obtain necessary funds to develop the basin’s water management and infrastructure
-Decision making and efficient solutions
4-Develop information systems to access the results of the hydrological measurement, the analysis of the basin water quality, the hydroelectric production with a preliminary annual program for every country
5-Develop research programs concerning resources, socio-economic aspects of basins.
6- Sharing knowledge by organizing of national and regional forums on water.
Dr. Fadi discussed the hydrodiplomatic negotiation for the rationalization of agricultural practices and domestic water use:
1-Irrigation sector:
-Improvement of Irrigation and fertilization methods
-Implement water users association
-Reuse treated wastewater for this sector
-Improvement of irrigation and fertilization
2-Environmental preservation:
-Apply the “pollutor-pays” concept
-Implement technical control system to prevent river degradation
-Establishment of wastewater treatment plan
From 1984 to 1994, the conflict about Nahr el Kebir River between Syria and Lebanon was on its peak, but through Nahr el Kebir agreement there was a cooperation from 1999 to 2002.Nahr el kebir agreement states that:
1-Lebanon allocates 40% of the total flow
2-Syria allocates 60% of the total flow
3-projects:
-Joint stocking dam
-Surface area of irrigation
4-Installation, maintenance, measurement of meteorological data, volume and flow of water
5-The watercourses states must protect and preserve the ecosystem
-The joint committee of water and/or the ministries of both states
Problematic with Lebanon:
1) Issue of the Hasbani-Wazzani:
- Water stress situation in Lebanon: 50l/day
2) Issue of Shebaa farms:
-Identity issue
The report of the foresight group recommends that the total of Jordan river basin conventional water and non conventional water which is consisted of canal red-dead sea/Med-dead sea, treated waste water, desalination and sea water springs are a 4 billion m ³/yr which should be equally divided between the shared basins in order to return Golan heights (Syria) and Shebaa farms (Lebanon).To sum up, water can be the force of understanding and promote the application of the “peace culture” in the ME.

Beeatoona launched an event for the e-cycling project for a better future. This project is funded by USAID, Transparency and accountability ِِ
Grants (TAG), and Amideast Lebanon. KHALIL SHEHAB SCHOOL-MAKASSEd was invited to the event on Thursday November 30, 2010 and it was attended by Reine Hably and Rawaa Shehab.
E –waste contains toxic materials that are harmful to humans and the environment and these elements become really dangerous when devices are broken or went to garbage where there are burned.
Ministries in Lebanon witness a lack of process and disposal facilities and there is no legislation to manage these e-wastes. E-cycle prevents us from health and environmental risk.
According to a questionnaire done by beeatoona 65% of the people are not aware of e-waste hazardous disposal danger.
According to the UN report there are an increase of 40,000,000 ton yearly of e -waste and this
Will increase to 500% in the coming years because of the increasing use of electronics.
Ministries disposal of e-wastes:
1-35% are sent away, mainly to the garbage
2-65% are stored
Some types of e-wastes:
1- TV and Pc monitors
2- Computers and computer peripherals (e.g. web cams, keyboards, scanners, printers, usb flash memory)
3- Audio and stereo equipment (e.g. Mp3 players,dvd,vcr and cd players,etc,)
4- Corded and wireless communication devices
5- Fax and copy machines
6- Video game consoles
7- Batteries,adaptors,chargers and ups
8- Cell phones
Some toxic materials founded in the e –waste and their effects:
1-Arsenic founded in Microwaves and switches cause Cancer-diabetes.
2-Lead founded in Computer or TV monitors causes paralysis, coma and death.
3-Mercury founded in Batteries, flat screens and switches causes Diarrhea, lung damage-kidney and fetus development damage
Recycling helps reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills, reducing the amount of toxic chemicals absorbed into the earth.
How is e-cycling done? :
1-Detoxication
2-Dismantling
3-shredding
4-Refining

Green IT conference, for the first time in Lebanon, was organized by “Formatech”, supported by Microsoft and Green party of Lebanon. Bank Med is the green exclusive sponsor. The conference took place in Universite Saint – Joseph on Wednesday 15th of December .Khalil Shehab Primary School was invited to the conference which was attended by Reine hably and Zeina shehab. A representative of the Minister of the Environment started the conference by encouraging the Lebanese forces to conduct internal procedures to contribute to a better future. Planning and Action are required to achieve an eco friendly environment. People that may help in the internal procedures are UNDP and companies’ assistants. Cost-benefit analysis should dominate the economical system of any company. Bank Med offers BM credit cards to finance environmental projects. Mr.Charbel Nakhle from “Formatech”sheded the light on global warming and Corporate Social Responsibility concepts. According to researchers, the causes of the global warming are diverse. Some believe that the main cause goes to the high emissions of carbon di-oxide CO2; others believe that the sun is getting hotter and the remaining researchers believe that the global warming is caused in part by the greenhouse effect that results in spreading many gases such as: CO2-CH4-N2O-HFC3. Global warming is highly persistent when high emissions of CO2 are combined with water vaporization. The effects of global warming are erosion, loss of wetlands and fresh water drinking supplies. Another environmental threat is the increase in sea level due to absence of effective damns. Half of the world’s population lies along coasts so this problem targets a large audience. Mr.Nakhle introduced the role of Green IT in driving an efficient, modern business, encouraging large energy and cost savings. Green computing refers to environmental sustainable computing .Greening your computer equipments is a low risk. Computer energy is often wasted when leaving computer on when not in use. The fan, CPU and screen savers consume power. Some toxic materials found in the electronic advices are lead, mercury and cadmium. These substances when thrown in the garbage where they will be burned will result in many negative and mortal consequences. The lead used in soldering printed circuit boars and other components cause damage to the central and peripheral brain. The mercury spreads out in water transforming to methylated mercury leading to a chronic brain damage. According to researches, in 2010 new users of computers in china and India are more than 178,000,000 and 80,000,000 respectively. This dramatic increase should be incorporated by IT eco-friendly green solutions:
1-Re-use of the PCs by giving them to Mosques, churches and libraries
2-Refurbish: change the memory and the CPU to be able to use the computer for a longer time
3-Recycling : plastic is found all over the parts of the computer
4-video conferencing to reduce travel costs
5-using LCD projector to reduce paper waste.
6-Use power saver mode
Here are some Go Green challenges:
1-charge your business units for their energy usage. Put a plafond to drive down the energy usage and requirements.
2-Google Desktop gadget for XP and vista that optimizes your power setting
3-Data center redesign
4-Cooling through dynamic fresh air
5-Using hardware virtualization .Decrease the number of physical servers by having virtual servers and this result in decreasing servers’ heat, maintenance and environmental consumption
Then MR. Ghassan chahine announced Microsoft commitment to software and technology that help people and organizations all over the world to improve the environment. Microsoft goal is to reduce the impact of their operations and products, and to be a leader in environmental responsibility.
What Microsoft is doing?
1-reduce the 3% of energy consumed by software driven devices
2-accelerate researches
3-partner with leading environmental companies
4-Decrease carbon footprint
5-invest to decrease environmental impacts
6-Increase ICT to save energy use
7-reduce and monitor the CO2 emissions from: data centers, real estate infrastructure and travel
Then there was a listing of Microsoft advanced environmental monitor and control:
1-Re-inventing the data center
2-Air side economization \Air ventilation
3- Microsoft cloud computing
4-Window 7 already built to reduce energy of ICT
5-Eye on earth (global observatory for environmental factors where people can check the quality of air and water)
6-Microsoft Hohm where citizens can check the impact on the environment and be recommended to buy a solar water heat
7- Microsoft International project “Imagine cup”. In Lebanon, USEK University won during the project competition and it is a green university for the coming 10 years. After the project, there is a room in the university that measures the CO2 emissions.
Finally, Mr.philippe skaff introduced the green party of Lebanon: ‘’الحزب الخضر اللبناني “as a party that cares about the environmental prosperity and introduced briefly a demo of the Beirut Green River project .
This project tend to clean Beirut River and harvest all around it green spaces that will be surrounded by huge gardens, parks, buildings and restaurants. This project needs to be funded by the government, municipalities and the wealthy investors.

Beach Clean- Up Day

Lebanese Army soldiers and environmental campaigners participated in a global day to raise awareness about the importance of keeping beaches clean, so that everyone can enjoy them.
President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Saad El-Hariri attended the launching of the “Big Blue” cleaning station at Ramlet al-Baida.They also met a group of participating Army and volunteer divers. The project is organized in cooperation between Environment and Youth and Sports ministries and the local municipalities. Hundreds of volunteers removed rubbish from more than 70 beaches along Lebanon’s seashore. School and university students also participated including volunteers from the Civil Defense.
We, at KSPS, have also volunteered and headed out to help keep our beaches clean and enjoy our beautiful land.
So beach clean up continues....Lebanon has very beautiful beaches that need to be taken care of. We truly hope we don't need to clean- up anymore!!!

Reused Crafts

Nursery & KG1 students learned the importance of Reusing crafts and different items instead of throwing them away. In this way we can help the environment. They made pets puppets out of toilet paper rolls and flowers out of egg cartons. They were glad to help the environment in their own way!

During our environmental awareness week, various projects tackling different important issues related to the environment were done at school by students. One of these projects that students have enjoyed working on was "Recycling Batteries." It proved to be a very crucial project that students gained a lot of information. The project passed through several stages before its final completion. First, students gathered information and read a lot about it. Then they worked in groups. Every group focused on an aspect of the project. They prepared drawings and posters and displayed them on bulletin boards. Students also piled all their work in a class book about batteries. In accordance to our choosing this project, we joined a Lebanese environmental organization called Beeatoona. We contacted them once we had collected a big number of unused batteries and e- waste. They were very elated when they found out about the amount of work done and presented us with awards in recognition to our active environmental effort.

Going Green Fundraiser

Today was not a regular school day, but rather a green school day with the final event of The Green School Project was taking place. The garage and bake sale titled " Go Green Fundraiser" started at ten with a presentation about The Environmental Awareness Week activities and a short power point presentation summarizing all activities with pictures. We were very happy to see many guests sharing in our event. We had visitors from other Makassed schools like: Omar Bin Al Khattab, Ali Bin Abi Taleb, Abi Baker Al Sadeeq, Makassed College for Girls, and Khadija Al Kobra. Students enthusiastically rushed to have a look at the items being sold to choose from them and encircled the cotton candy and pop corn machines, while other waited for their turn to get a beautiful face painting.

KSPS students demonstrated very good communication skills as they were the ones responsible for selling items and food and collecting money. They also were present at the different bulletin boards on which most of the projects were displayed to explain to the visitors more about every project.

Because success is measured by the outcome, then we are elated to announce that the event was a most successful one. Our aim was achieved and it is not too late before you notice the direct change. The school will have a new look as the pots of flowers and plants will cover our window sills and turn our school to a true green school.

Special thanks go to the Makassed community for their sharing and contribution and continuous support and motivation. We would like to that all the schools that came and took part in our event. A sincere thank you to Bank Med is pioneer in adopting a project that encourages schools to take green steps.

We are grateful to each and every person belonging to KSPS family; to the parents' committee for being there and lending a big hand. Together we were and will always able to achieve success and always strive for excellence.

ضمن الّنشاطات الهادفة للمحافظة على البيئة، كانت لنا جلسة مع تلامذة الّصّف الثّاني الأساسي وذويهم. حيث قمنا بمشروع اعادة التّدوير لأشياء تمّ استخدامها سابقا كزجاجة الماء البلاستيكّية ،وأعواد المشاوي أو الماصّات بالاضافة الى أوراق ملوّنة.ومنها صنعنا زهريات حوت وردات تطاولات أعناقها وتفتحت عن بتلات ملوّنة بألوان الرّبيع . زيّن بها التّلاميذ شرفات المدرسة والصّفوف . آملين أن نكون قد زرعنا في نفوس أولادنا وذويهم محبّة البيئة واستغلال ما نستعمله مرّة لعدّة مرّات فأهلا بشباب ناشط داعم للبيئة بجميع مجالاته

Taking Small Steps; Making a Huge Difference

Most of us are not paying attention and growing habits that are affecting the environment in a negative ways. It is time to stop. We can't stand silent. We know that we should start somewhere and that we are part of the solution not the problem.
For that reason, change will start with the young. Do you think that children can’t make a difference? Not so. Children are aware of serious environmental problems around them. They decided to change these bad habits into more environment friendly ones. They promised to share it not only with friends at school, but also with their families and friends outside school.
There are dozens of small things you and your children can do every day to save energy and keep the world cleaner and greener. At school, students learned that they can do little things, like:
- Turning off the lights and switching off the fan before leaving the classroom so as not to waste energy
- Closing the water when brushing your teeth so as not to keep water running
- Throwing the trash in the wastebasket so as not to litter the ground
- Being aware of the importance of recycling and throwing objects that will be recycled in the waste basket or boxes that are particular for each item
Keep in mind that if your child develops good habits now, he/she will keep as he/she grows.

It is important to reduce the use of papers and cardboards, so in the computer period, students of grades five and six preferred to use their computer skills in order to create drawings about the theme of the environment. Their drawings dealt with pollution and its different types. More drawings showed their own perspective of a healthy environment in which green is the dominant color. They also wrote a caption for each drawing. Their drawings reflected their deep understanding of the serious environmental problems that are affecting Earth and their lives and demonstrated also their computer skills. Their work was indeed very interesting as students were enthusiastic to complete it.

Raising students' awareness was the main objective for doing the different science projects for grades four,five,and six.The project consisted of three power point presentations dealing with different environmental issues.The first power point gave students an apt idea about kinds of pollution and their causes.Students discussed and shared their knowledge about the subjects with observations and examples of bad habits that people are following.The second power point introduced tips for saving and preserving water.Each student has something to say.It was a fruitful discussion.The final presentation dealt with 3Rs:Reduce,Reuse,and Recycle and their importance to preserve.The aim of the whole projects was to change the students' attitudes and habits making them aware that with little effort,lots of environmental problems can be tackled.

Dear friend of Makassed KSPS,

You probably have noticed that green is everywhere these days, news, politics, schools, technology, switching to organic food, recycling etc… Because we cannot stand silent and do nothing as we see mother earth suffering. Because we feel that we have to take active steps and do our part in saving the environment. Because we aim at raising environmentalists not only aware of the serious natural problems that might threaten their lives and future, but also help them believe and realize that they are part of the solution rather than the problem, proving that kids can make a difference, we have developed a "Green School Project" and participated in " The Green School Award Competition" organized by Bank Med.

How did we go green at Makassed KSPS? We used simple strategies to integrate environmental education into all classrooms from Nursery to Grade 6. Students have participated in a myriad of activities that increased both their awareness of environmental issues and their capacity to act affirmatively on such issue. Our students recycled paper, monitored use of energy, cleaned beaches, planted trees, guided their families, etc… We also adopted an earth friendly theme for the artwork that adorns our bulletin board in the building, halls, playground, and classrooms. By going green we did not have to add any layer of the curriculum or compromise any existing program. We just added a greater dimension and scope to our existing curriculum.

"Go Green Fundraiser" is one of the important event in this regard. We want to reach out for the community, showing them what we did and hoping they get enthusiastic and join us in our green cause. After a short presentation on Monday, April 26, at 10:00 am, we are having a bake sale and a garage sale at Gezairi Building, Hamra. Students are going to sell different used items. The money raised will help us carry on with our project and fulfill our goal. For instance, we will use the money raised, among other things, to buy pots with various plants and flowers and place them on the window sills all around school, and we will put signs everywhere at school about saving water and energy and protecting the environment.

In order to ensure the success of our mission and reach the objective that we have put, your sharing and support in this event is much appreciated. This is a call for help. We are the first lines of defense in the environmental movement and together we will make a difference. We hope to reshape children views and habits which then transcends from school, to home, and beyond we hope this awareness transfers to their lives outside school. We really hope you join us at our event. We are looking forward to see you on Monday and in green!

The March Of The Frogs

Kindergarten and grade one students have joined the ENO Climate Change Campaign this year and it was so interesting and successful.

We marched down the street with "Frank the Frog" who was hungry for pledges. We met a lot of people who were so kind to feed "Frank" with pledges of how to save the environment. "Frank", for sure, enjoyed his healthy breakfast and thanked every and each one for being so helpful.

We were looking forward for this year's ENO Climate Change Campaign project. The campaign started with a visit to President Amine Daouk, Miss Adla Shatila, and Dr. Kamel Dallal. They previewed our special ENO picture album, signed our pledge and fed "Frank The Frog" with their own pledges.
Our next stop was Beirut Municipality. We handed a letter to the mayor Mr. El Ariss with a plea for some changes we would like to see in our city, Beirut. The mayor promised us that our requests will be considered.
Dr. El Alayli, the head of the environment committee in the municipality also met us. We were overwhelmed by his warm welcome and generous hospitality.
Special thanks goes to Mr. Amine Daouk, Miss Adla Shatila, and Dr. Kamel Dallal for always showing enthusiasm to share in our various projects. Your cooperation is very much appreciated.
Gratitude also goes to Mrs. Rola Ajouz for giving us the opportunity to visit the municipality and meet municipality members. A big thank you to the mayor and to Dr. El Alayli.

We would also like to thank Mr. Mika Vanhanen, ENO Director, for your dedication and hard work! You all contributed in making this activity a very successful one!

"A selection of the children’s waste sculptures will be presented to the participants of COP15 as a part of the planned "Children’s Creative ClimateCamp" which will take place in Ballerup and Rødovre from 2-6 December 2009. The children’s waste sculptures and their short climate statements will be regarded as the voices of the children."
We have invented artwork out of waste and unused materials and shared our recycling projects on thingtalk website. We very much hope that our voices will be heard around the world.

Our School has participated in the introductory seminar of "Things Talk", an international climate and waste art project for children conducted by Cross Cultures Project Association (CCPA).
The education project, Things Talk - Children, Climate Change, and Waste Art, aims to provide the children of the world with an opportunity to be heard in the global debate on climate change. Things Talk creates a global platform, where children can get a chance to speak about their ideas, concerns and future dreams in relation to how climate changes will affect the world they live in both locally and globally. The project is also about experiencing and sharing one's experiences, dreams and thoughts with others. It is therefore possible for all classes that complete the project, to share photos and thoughts with children in other parts of the country and the world.

ENO Tree Planting Day: September 2009

Our school year has started in a very special way. We have participated in the ENO Tree Planting day and joined more than 2500 schools in 122 countries. This event is a practical way of enhancing environmental and global education. It connects children
all over the world to focus on environmental issues. What is more, the event fosters peace
education and increases the awareness of school children of the importance of forests on a global scale. The planting of trees took place everywhere at noon local time. The first to start was Tonga in Oceania and as the Sun and Earth continued to turn, Asia, Africa and Europe joined in as well. Some time later the continents of North and South America grabbed the hoe, and last area to participate was Samoa Islands. The world has taken a remarkable step towards a more ecological way of life.

We would like to thank Mr. Mika Vanhanen, the coordinator of ENO-Environment Online in Joensuu Finland, for his extra ordinary effort to make this event a successful one...

We made crafty posters to learn about parts of plants. We opened and pressed flat paper muffin cups. Then we drew stems and leaves with crayons. Finally, we glued seeds to the center of the flowers.

ENO Tree Planting Day: Going Greener

For the second time, we've participated in the ENO Tree Planting Day Event. The aim was to plant trees at midday, in every corner of the world. The first trees were planted at noon in Oceania. Following the Sun, new trees were put to earth in Asia, Europe and Africa. Finally this chain of trees reached Americas, so the globe has turned on its axis.

Tree planting is important for us at Makassed Khalil Shehab School. We have participated in the first event and were more than happy to take part in the second. Firstly, it reminds us of the nature and the importance of environmental protection. Secondly, it is a symbol for the international co-operation.
We decided to go to Sanayeh Park on May 22nd. Grades One, Two, and Three took part in this event. Different activities were done by Grades One and Two students at school. Grade One students showed how crafty they are by making a muffin cup sunflower. Their creative talents were unveiled when they created a crafty poster. They also learned about the parts of a plant.

Grade Two students did two activities. The first one was called "Eggheads". They saved egg shells, then cracked the shells open and used the bottom halves. Next, they drew faces on the shells with markers. After that, students planted seeds inside the egg shell. The last step was to watch the "hair" grow on the egg heads.
The second activity of Grade Two students had to do with crafts. Each student made his own dove using plastic plates and spoons.
Grade Two and three students were eager to participate in this event, so they brought their own plants, spades, and gloves. On May 22nd, accompanied by their English Language teachers, they went to Sanayeh Park. They eagerly ran to the empty places in the park to plant their plants. They helped each other digging and planting their seeds and plants in the soil. Then, they marched around the park. They stopped to speak to some people about their work and even took pictures with them. Next, they tried to fly the doves as far as they could into the air. It was a sign of their innocence and freedom. They are choosing a new way, a new beginning to make the world a better place for them. Their choice was to go greener, respect Mother Earth, and save life on our beautiful planet.
Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come!

Beach Clean Up Day

Beach Clean Up at Ramlet Al-Bayda

In the presence of a representative of the Lebanese President, Mr. Michel Sleiman, Cedars Oraganization launched a campaign to clean up the beaches of Lebanon from Al-Abda in the north till Ras Nakkoura in the south.
Among the volunteers were representatives of the Ministry of Educatin, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of the Environment, Lebanese army, municipalities, enviromental, social, civil, and scouting organizations, diving clubs, and students from different universities and schools.

We volunteered to participate in this beach clean up campaign. We enjoyed cleaning up the beach with our parents to help keep our environment clean. We were all really happy to be involved to save our beautiful sea.
